Boston Scientific’s Penn Field Innovation Center transforms a protected historic structure into a sophisticated training center and modern workplace. Working within significant preservation constraints, the design celebrates the building’s original brick, timber structure, and soaring volumes while introducing contemporary spaces for training, research, collaboration, and everyday work. The project also brings Boston Scientific and Apollo together following the acquisition, balancing Boston Scientific’s global identity with the warmth, character, and spirit of Austin.

The protected historic structure presented unique design constraints, complex code analysis to marry an existing historic wood structure with a modern technology requirement. At the same time, the project brought together Boston Scientific and its acquired company, Apollo, creating an opportunity to establish a unified workplace. We accommodated a medical lab for testing, demonstration, and training on medical devices; 3D printing labs for design iteration of tools; and a machine lab for fabricating prototypes. The result is a sophisticated training center and everyday work environment that reflects the character and spirit of Austin.
